Breathe easy during National Lung Month.
Did you know that the average person takes between 17000 and 24000 breaths each day? That’s a lot of work for a very important part of your body; the lungs.
Your lungs work hard 24/7, helping to transfer oxygen around your body, so you can run to catch the bus, chase your kids around the park, and tackle that never-ending flight of stairs.
Our lungs also help us to talk, shout at the neighbours, laugh at a joke, and cry during a sad film. They also eliminate waste from our bodies when we breathe out, in the form of carbon dioxide.
Statistically, we are a country who loves to smoke. According to a 2015 Global Adult Tobacco Survey, 23.8%, or 16.6 million people in the Philippines were reported to be smokers, with the average number of cigarettes smoked each day being 11.
To combat this, a ban on smoking in public places was introduced in 2017, in an attempt to encourage smokers to kick the habit. With smoking being the number one cause of lung cancer, it was a measure that was indeed necessary, and has proven to be effective.
Despite this new law, lung cancer claims the lives of 25 people in the Philippines each day, and is the 7th leading cause of death in the country.
August is National Lung Month, a good time to reflect on how you are treating your precious lungs, and to investigate your risk of developing one of many lung related illnesses.
There are a number of simple things that you can do in support of National Lung Month, which will benefit you, your family, your friends and your workmates:
- Quit smoking, or at least, reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke each day.
- Avoid second hand smoke. Also known as passive smoking, simply being around smokers can cause lung related illnesses.
- Open up your airways the natural way! Get outdoors and improve your lung capacity, wellbeing and fitness.
- Protect yourself from dangerous carcinogens in the air. Wear a face mask if you are in an environment with high amounts of dust or chemical fumes.
As well as smoking being the main cause of lung cancer, there are sometimes other factors involved. If you have a family history of lung cancer, then there is an increased risk that you may develop it too.
EasyDNA Philippines wants to help you to breathe easy, offering our Genetic Predisposition Test for Lung Cancer, which will tell you if you have a genetic susceptibility to this, and 33 other conditions.
Analysing your unique DNA, the test results will indicate your risk level for developing these conditions, as well as providing a comparison of your lifetime risk to that of the average population.
This will allow you to take the necessary steps required in
improving your lung health, and will provide valuable information on your overall predispositions and risks of obtaining a number of potentially life threatening conditions.
So get ready to blow a breath of fresh air into your health future, and get behind National Lung Month, and a personalised DNA test from EasyDNA Philippines.
Your lungs will thank you!
