Dementia Action Week 2019 – A time to remember those who cannot.

We’ve all forgotten where we put our car keys, our sunglasses, or our book on occasion. We’ve all walked into a room, only to totally forget why we walked in there in the first place. Dementia is an umbrella term, used to describe a number of neurological conditions that result in the loss of memory and processing ability. The most common forms of dementia are:

  • Alzheimer’s Disease – the most common, affecting adults of any age, mostly from the ages of 60 onwards.
  • Vascular dementia – occurring when there is a shortage of blood flow to the brain, caused by a stroke. Symptoms may appear to improve until another stroke occurs, but a demise in cognitive function is still evident.
  • Frontotemporal dementia – a degeneration of the brain’s frontal or temporal lobes.
  • Lewy body dementia – caused by the degeneration and death of the nerve cells in the brain, thought to be caused by abnormally shaped structures within the nerve cells.

Little Boy Lost: Family reunited by the power of social media and DNA technology

Philip Farinas was just like any other young boy in his town. Living happily with a loving family, lots of brothers and sisters to play with, life was simple and happy. In 1990, on a day just like any other, Philip left his house to play with the neighborhood children, as he had done many times before.

Philip was found by Idel Dagami, who took him into his care for four years. Although he was welcomed as a part of the Dagami family, the strains of a household that already had twelve children to care for became too much, so Philip was adopted by the Dagami’s neighbor, Ruth, who (brought him in the province to her sister Evelyn’s home.  Evelyn loved and cared for the young boy.  Over the years, Philip grew up and moved on, but he never forgot his family. Did they think about him? Did they try to look for him?

It was here that his family would post a picture of him each year on his birthday, telling his story in the hope that someone would recognize or remember seeing him.

The number one questions we get asked here at Easy DNA Philippines is, “Does a blood sample or a saliva swab provide better results when doing a home paternity test?”

This comes down to a few factors, and at the end of the day, is of course dependant on personal preference.
All paternity tests at EasyDNA Philippines are carried out using a simple, and painless oral swab, where a saliva sample is taken and analysed against 16 genetic markers to provide highly accurate results. The only exception to this is the Prenatal Paternity Test, in which clients provide a blood sample, and the Discreet Test, which can analyse a range of bodily fluids and objects that may have residual DNA on them.

Although both saliva and blood samples are great options, there are pros and cons for each method. Saliva samples, like those taken for EasyDNA paternity tests, are quick and non-invasive, and the collected DNA is long lasting if stored appropriately. However, if saliva swabs aren’t stored correctly, they can become ineffective, as bacteria attacks the cells containing DNA, rendering it an unusable sample. Additionally, the cells in a saliva swab are invisible, so the presence of DNA is only assumed at the time of sampling.

Similarly, there are advantages and disadvantages to choosing to a DNA test that requires a blood sample. Taking blood is a quick procedure, and storing blood in the correct tubes greatly reduces the chance of contamination. Despite this, drawing a blood sample requires a needle, which for some people can be trepidating and painful, especially if trying to obtain a sample from a baby or young child. A DNA blood test also cannot be done from the comfort of your own home, as it has to be conducted by a qualified medical practitioner.

EasyDNA expands its range of Clinical testing services with the new Celiac Disease Genetic test

SYDNEY, India – (05/10/2017) International DNA testing company EasyDNA continues to expand its product portfolio by introducing its new Celiac Disease Genetic test which screens an individual’s genes to confirm whether they carry the genes implicated in celiac disease.

EasyDNA’s initiative to launch its new Celiac Disease Genetic test stems from the increase in celiac disease awareness over the past few years. Commenting on this development, the company’s Product Manager stated that “celiac disease has moved from being an unknown and rare disorder to a common disease affecting a more than expected amount of people across the globe. This occurrence has encouraged EasyDNA to start offering its customers an easy and reliable genetic testing service which confirms whether the individual being tested is at risk of developing the disease.”

The company recommends that the client consults with a medical specialist when doing this test. The individual’s DNA will be tested by an accredited laboratory for two specific genes, HLA DQ2 and DQ8, which are commonly found in people with celiac disease. Not having these genes will likely mean you will not develop the disease. SYDNEY, India – (28/08/2017) International DNA testing company EasyDNA launches a new, non-invasive 99% accurate prenatal screening test for Down’s syndrome as well as fetal chromosomal abnormalities.

The NIPT test is a scientific advancement in the field of screening tests that allows far higher levels of accuracy than more conventional screening tests and is carried out using just a medical blood draw.  In relation to the launch, a company representative states that “This cutting-edge test is 100% risk free and requires only a blood draw. The Launch of the NIPT test is in line with the company’s on-going strategy of increasing its portfolio of prenatal tests – a market expanding at an exponential rate and is predicted to touch US$2.38 bn by 2022. A new range of tests are expected to be launched in the near future. EasyDNA is also currently working directly with some prenatal clinics, gynecologists and obstetricians in order to try and create a greater awareness of this test.
